Painter, draughtsman, architect and translator, born in Newcastle upon Tyne. Etchells studied for several years at Royal College of Art and for an equal period in Paris up to World War I, where he became interested in Fauve and Cubist painting. He showed with Roger Fry’s Post-Impressionist exhibitions in London in 1912–13, by which time he was practising as an architect; became involved in the Omega Workshops; then accompanied Wyndham Lewis when he left to found the Rebel Art Centre. Participated in the Vorticist movement and contributed drawings to Blast. Also showed with Group X and LG, of which he was a founder-member. As a war artist he was notable for his painting of Armistice Day for the Canadian War Memorial. He then abandoned painting for architecture, becoming a fellow of RIBA in 1931.
