Sculptor in a variety of materials. Born at Burcot, Worcestershire, son of the sculptor Walter Gilbert, he studied with him, with Sir Alfred Gilbert, at Birmingham Central School of Art, at the Royal College of Art under Derwent Wood and at the Royal Academy Schools under William Reid Dick and Henry Poole. At the Schools he won silver and bronze medals. Also studied for a time in Italy. Exhibited RA, RSA, SWEA and RHA. Gilbert completed a wide range of work, including busts of the composer Sir Edward Elgar and the conductor Sir Henry Wood, military badges and memorials, ecclesiastical sculpture and Inspiration to Flight, on the British Overseas Airways Corporation building at Brentford. Gilbert’s work is illustrated in the volume RBS: Modern British Sculpture, published in 1939, and in Arthur T Broadbent’s Sculpture Today in Great Britain 1940–1943.
