Painter, draughtsman and teacher who was son of the artist Norman Gilbert and who gained an honours degree at Glasgow School of Art, 1987–91. After being an arts organiser at Possilpark Community Centre, Gilbert held a number of teaching appointments, including Glasgow School of Art, Benenden School and Heatherley’s School of Fine Art. In 1999–00 he was artist-in-residence at St Bartholomew’s and the Royal London Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Unit, working with surgeon Iain Hutchison to depict changes wrought by facial surgery, with a 2000 exhibition launch at the National Portrait Gallery and a national tour. Gilbert took part in many mixed shows. Awards included the Elizabeth Greenshields Foundation, 1991 and 1993; PS Award, 1992; Glasgow City Council and David Cargill Awards, both in 1994 at Royal Glasgow Institute of the Fine Arts; prizes at BP National Portrait Award, National Portrait Gallery, 1994–6; and the Alastair Salvesen Art Trust Scholarship, working in Spain, 1997.
