Architect, mural painter, calligrapher, designer and teacher, full name Leslie MacDonald Gill and known as Max. He was the brother of the artists Eric and Cecil Gill and was born in Brighton, Sussex. He studied at Royal Naval Academy and art at Chichester School of Art and Central School of Arts and Crafts. Early in the century was articled as an architect, was eventually elected fellow of RIBA and worked at such buildings as Lincoln Cathedral and the House of Commons, being noted for his murals. Was also an Imperial War Graves Commission designer and for a time a lecturer on architecture and completed posters for the Empire Marketing Board and London’s Underground Railway. Tate Gallery holds. Died in London.
