Artist, born in London, who trained under Iain Macnab at Grosvenor School of Modern Art and in Paris. During World War II she drove an ambulance in London. In 1958 she moved to Cornwall. From before the war she had begun to exhibit in mixed company, over the years showing with RA, LG, NEAC and Whitechapel Art Gallery. Also showed in Cornwall at Newlyn Orion Gallery, Penzance, and Wills Lane Gallery, St Ives, and she was included in Artists from Cornwall at RWA, 1992. Had solo shows at Plymouth City Art Gallery, 1969, Newlyn Orion in 1973–6, Bodmin Fine Arts, 1974–8, and Windsor Fine Arts, 1978. Wren Gallery, Burford, handled Gillchrest’s work from 1990, in 2002 held the exhibition Joan and Friends, with a solo show in 2003.
