Bravura painter in oil of figures, portraits, landscapes, still life and his own family, and teacher. Born in London, in 1900 he attended art school in Clapham, in 1904 becoming a full-time pupil at Croydon School of Art. In 1908 accepted at Royal Academy Schools, where his teachers included Ernest Jackson and Charles Sims, but the strongest, lasting influence remained Schools visitor John Singer Sargent. Won Landseer Scholarship in 1912, British Institution Scholarship in 1914, suspended during military service. Because of injuries, was retired with a life pension. Travelled in France and in the 1920s began to have success with pictures at the Royal Academy, where his portrait of his sister Rosalind was bought by the Chantrey Bequest. Also showed at ROI and RP.
