Painter and etcher working on a small scale and using rich colours. His inspiration came “from the atmosphere of pubs, cafés, bars, concerts and street scenes. These provide me with bizarre and humorous characters which are wonderful subjects.” Hendley, a miner’s son, grew up in Cresswell, Derbyshire, at 15 taking an apprenticeship which led to his becoming a master butcher after eight years. In 1985 he moved to London, attended life classes and took a foundation course at the City Lit. In the summer of 1993 he obtained his bachelor’s degree in fine art painting at Central St Martins College, his degree show being a sell-out. Went on to become artist-in-residence at Royal Opera House. Showed at Sue Williams Gallery and elsewhere.
