Painter, teacher and writer who was included in The Garrick/Milne Prize, 2003, with his oil on canvas of Andy Moffat. Horton attended Sir John Cass Art School, 1964–6; City and Guilds of London Art School, 1966–70, in the latter year winning a Travelling Scholarship to Florence; and Royal College of Art painting school, 1971–4, gaining his master’s. Horton was artist-adviser to Winsor & Newton for Paint and Painting, Tate Gallery, 1982, and taught widely, including part-time at Sir John Cass, Mary Ward Centre and Anglia Polytechnic University. He also ran painting and drawing classes in the United Kingdom and abroad. He was a contributor to The Artist from 1976, also to other art magazines. Among his books were Composition, 1994, Skin Tones, 1995, and Pastel Techniques, 2000.
