Painter and ceramic sculptor, born in Irvine, Ayrshire. She studied at Glasgow School of Art, 1981–5, then awards enabled her to study under Georg Baselitz at the Hochschule der Künste in Berlin, 1985–6. After this she shared her time in Berlin and Fairlie, on Scotland’s west coast. Hunter’s theme was the female form, mother-and-child relationships and more latterly the female related to other individuals. Her brushwork was free and gestural. To lessen her dependence on the Western figurative tradition she turned for inspiration to primitive forms. Hunter had early solo shows, in 1986, in Berlin and Ayr. Also exhibited at Vanessa Devereux Gallery and at Art First, 1997. Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art, Edinburgh, holds her work.
