Painter, draughtsman, printmaker and teacher, born in Newport, Monmouthshire. He studied at Newport College of Art, 1930–4, and Royal College of Art, 1934–7, working in the school of engraving under Robert Austin and Malcolm Osborne. From 1938–40 taught at Leeds College of Art. From 1940–3 served in Military Police, then transferred, 1943–5, to Royal Air Force Central Photographic Unit Model Making Section, returning to teach at Leeds, 1945–9. Next moved to Eastbourne College of Art as deputy principal, 1950–2, then going to Birmingham College of Art and Design, 1952–70, where he was eventually appointed head of the school of painting. Mason was a member of RBSA. His exhibitions included Ikon Gallery, Birmingham; John Moores Exhibition, Liverpool; RA; a solo show in Eastbourne; various group shows in Birmingham, Bradford, Leeds and London; RP; and Hexagon Gallery, Midlands Arts Centre, Birmingham.
