Painter in oil on canvas, born in County Tyrone, Northern Ireland. He studied at Canterbury College of Art, 1972–5, then Royal College of Art, 1975–8. Although he travelled and worked for periods in Italy, Ireland, France and America, McAleer was based at Bluecoat Studios, Liverpool. He was a prizewinner in John Moores Liverpool Exhibition in 1978, also showing there in 1985. Other appearances included Arts Council, Belfast, 1979; Art and the Sea, ICA, 1981; Paton Gallery, 1982; Bluecoat Gallery, 1985; Kerlin Gallery, Dublin, 1988; and Fenderesky Gallery, Belfast, 1991. Solo exhibition at Art First, 2000. He also took part in British and foreign art fairs. Arts Council, Ulster Museum in Belfast and European Parliament in Brussels hold examples.
