Sculptor who used a large range of mass-produced or found objects to create abstract works; teacher, born in London, one of the triplets of artists Ben Nicholson and Barbara Hepworth. He is sometimes referred to as Simon Hepworth-Nicholson. After studying at Royal College of Art sculpture department, 1953–4, Nicholson attended Cambridge University, where he read archaeology and anthropology, 1954–7, followed by a research year. He lived in St Ives, Cornwall, in the early 1960s, then was visiting professor of sculpture at Moore College of Art, Philadelphia, 1964–5; taught at University of California, Berkeley, 1965–71; then joined the staff of the Open University in 1971. One-man shows included McRoberts and Tunnard Gallery, 1963, and York University, 1978.
