Painter of animals and birds, born in Campbeltown, Argyllshire. He studied painting in Paris at Académie Julian. In early 1890s lived in Texas, America. Served in Army during World War I. Pirie was a prolific exhibitor at Royal Glasgow Institute of the Fine Arts and RSA, also exhibiting at RA, Fine Art Society and elsewhere. His Mother Duck was a Chantrey Bequest purchase in 1940, now in Tate Gallery. Was elected RSA in 1923, becoming its president, 1933–44; was made an Hon. RA in 1933; was knighted four years later. Died in Glasgow.
