Sculptor, painter and teacher, born in Edinburgh where he studied painting at the College of Art, 1958–62. From 1963–74 he taught art in an Edinburgh school, then left to take up sculpture full-time, settling in Ross-shire. Scobie’s sculpture dates from the mid-1960s. He had a first solo exhibition in 1972 at Richard Demarco Gallery, Edinburgh, two years before he won the Invergordon Sculpture Prize. Although at first Scobie worked in metal in a Minimalist tradition, from the early 1980s he employed mainly terracotta. An important Scobie series was the bronze books begun in 1977; the Arts Council collection includes his Untitled Book Sculpture of 1981. A major retrospective was held at Talbot Rice Art Centre, Edinburgh, in 1984, and a show of Scobie’s Constructivist sculpture at Reed’s Wharf Gallery in 1994.
