Painter, designer, muralist and teacher, born in South Shields, County Durham. He attended the School of Art there, 1941–4, under Ernest Gill, then with a British Institution Scholarship studied under Ernest Blamey at Regent Street Polytechnic School of Art, 1947–50. Settled in Weston-super-Mare, Somerset, where he was head of the School of Art, 1958–84, also teaching at Bristol University. Was elected RWA in 1976, later becoming its vice-president from 1988–93, Hon. RWA in 2002. Showed at RA, Young Contemporaries and RBA and had a series of solo exhibitions in West Country.
