Painter, draughtsman and teacher, born in Toronto, Canada, who attended Ontario College of Art, then London University. He became a lecturer and art adviser and, after retiring in 1985, a full-time artist. In 1995, Stuart was artist-in-residence during the United Kingdom Year of Literature held at Ty Llen (House of Literature), later the Dylan Thomas Centre, and the Taliesin Theatre at Swansea University. While there the American-Irish novelist J P Donleavy read from his book The Ginger Man and Stuart sketched him, the resulting double portrait being acquired by Roy Davids. It was included in the catalogue and sale of The Roy Davids Collection, at Bonhams, Bond Street, in 2005. The National Portrait Gallery holds several portraits by Stuart, including one of the Welsh poet Dylan Thomas.
