Painter of highly patterned work, as in dumbpop, Jerwood Gallery, 1998–9. He attended London College of Printing, 1985–6; gained an honours degree in fine art, Camberwell College of Art, 1986–9; and his master’s at Goldsmiths’ College School of Art, 1992–4. He won a Rome Scholarship in Fine Art at the British School at Rome in 1999, previous awards being an Anthony Clarke Trust Scholarship and Wingate Scholarship, both 1990, and a Richard Mills Fellowship, 1991. Sturgis had a residency at Camden Arts Centre, 1997. His group shows included Unplugged, Unit 9, 36 Peckham Road, 1994; John Hansard Gallery, Southampton, 1996; Close up on Pattern, Laure Genillard Gallery, 1998; and John Moores Liverpool Exhibition, 2004. Had solo shows at Adam Gallery, 1991, 63 Union Street, 1992, Berwick Gymnasium Gallery, 2001, and one of witty abstracts at Richard Salmon in 2002.
