Painter, especially of landscape in oil, born and lived in Edinburgh, where he became a member of the Edinburgh Group. Served apprenticeship with a firm of lithographers and attended Royal Scottish Academy life classes at the Scottish Institution. Served in the Army during World War I. Married the artist Mary Newbery Sturrock, daughter of Fra Newbery. Sturrock especially appreciated the landscape of Galloway and of Dorset, where he and his wife lived for a while, and where his painting style reached its maturity. Returned to Edinburgh in 1938 to become treasurer of the RSA. Was elected RSA in 1937. He was briefly RSA secretary in 1953 before his death on holiday at St Abbs. Sturrock’s pictures have a dry, subdued appearance, and the landscapes, usually without animals or figures, are notable for their gaunt trees.
