Painter, printmaker and teacher, born in Liverpool, the eldest of four brothers of Thomas Titherington and his wife, known as Sharky, who created a loving environment despite straitened circumstances. This life and the Blitz were evocatively captured in Titherington’s solo show Mention the War at Liverpool University’s Senate House in 2003, shortly before the artist died. Titherington was a student at Liverpool School of Art, 1950–5, teachers including Arthur Ballard, George Mayer-Marton, Ted Griffiths and Martin Bell. Titherington later studied at Liverpool University, 1976, and Lancaster University, 1980. He had a varied career as a teacher, finally head of art at Edge Hill College of Higher Education, Ormskirk. He developed many interests that made him well known locally: freelance broadcaster, with his own show, Teacher’s Bookshelf, on BBC Radio Lancashire; drawing prolifically for local publications; being a lifelong member of the Labour Party; and a member of the Borough Council in Chorley, where he lived and was a parish councillor.
