Painter, draughtsman, writer and influential teacher, born in Carmarthen, Wales. Studied under W R Lethaby at the Royal College of Art and went on to become professor of design there. Exhibited RA. His four-volume English Wall Painting is a standard work, published between 1944–55. Examples of his drawings of such paintings are in the collection of the Victoria & Albert Museum. Lived at Haslemere, Surrey.
