This abstract oil tempera painting is prominently signed and dated on the front by Bissier. A sequence of black improvised gestures forms a motif, which sits upon a ground of pale wash. The application of a single point of red pigment highlights the ambiguous form that occupies the upper portion of the work. A product of the artist's subconscious, the shape suggests both figure and building.

Bissier was one of the first modern painters to draw his inspiration from Eastern cultures and philosophy. He was introduced to Chinese philosophy in 1927 and began making ink drawings, which combined spontaneity with Taoist meditation. He worked predominantly on paper but later developed techniques with egg and oil tempera that allowed him to work on canvas and textile.
