Nicholson’s early prints (1926–1937) were made in very small numbers and only eight impressions are recorded of three mugs and a bowl, of which Nicholson kept one in his personal collection. Until 1930, Nicholson focussed on the subject matter of domestic crockery in his linocuts and he wrote about the inspiration for his still lives in a letter to Patrick Heron (1952): ‘... the still life theme stems mainly from Chardin via my father, not only did my father paint innumerable still lives but from as long as I can remember my home was full of the most lovely spotted mugs and striped jugs and glass objects which he had collected’ (Tate Gallery Archive).
