British artist John Hoyland (1934–2011) was one of the finest abstract artists of his generation. The Royal College of Physicians (RCP) owns a superb example of his defining 1960s work – an enormous abstract which hangs in the Osler dining room. It is a striking piece amongst the RCP’s art collection which predominately holds portraits of medical professionals.

The painting was bought by a small group of RCP fellows in 1966 for £500 to compliment the room after the president complained that he ‘had nothing but a blank wall to stare at' during dinners. Treasurer Richard Bomford felt ‘it would go particularly well with the carpet'. When purchasing it he noted, 'We should not try and strike a bargain. It is not compatible with the dignity of the College'.
