Contrary to the title, Isack van Ostade seems to have painted a frozen river rather than a canal, since there is no towpath. A wide variety of people, stretching far into the distance, are using it as a temporary public highway and playground.

To the right of the painting, a white horse pulls a well-dressed family in a wooden sledge. Two men in bright clothes tend to the horse while, in the centre of the scene, a hunched man pushes a sledge in the opposite direction.
