On a wooden table we see a bowl of fruit placed on a green-striped cloth. Behind it we can make out a glass and a bottle. Braque often painted still life when he needed to clear his mind while struggling with a more complex painting. He learned some of his skills – like the imitation wood graining – from his father and grandfather who were traditional French painter-decorators. There is a wonderful calm about this painting, even a feeling of timelessness. The art historian Douglas Cooper wrote of Braque, 'There is nothing difficult [in his art]…no hidden moral or meaning…If we look, he will teach us to see, and this after all is the highest function of the true artist.'
