This portrait of the novelist A. J. Cronin by Stephen Conroy went on display at Dumbarton Library in 1986. It is one of several commissioned by Dumbarton District Council in 1984 and is now the property of West Dunbartonshire Council. The subject, A. J. Cronin, was born at Cardross, Dunbartonshire in 1896, and spent his youth at Dumbarton. He studied medicine at Glasgow University, and had a successful career as a doctor in different parts of Britain.
