This painting is listed by Sir Hans Sloane as: '209, A picture of Frere Jaques done by the young Brower at Brussells, 0 16 0.' The artist referred to by Sloane might be Adriaen Brouwer, who worked at Haarlem, Antwerp and Amsterdam. The identity of the subject is otherwise unknown. It might perhaps be 'Frere' Jacques Beaulieu, a French lithotomist (1651–1719) who would have been known to Sloane and of interest because of his profession. The untrained Beaulieu, who had a tendency to kill off his patients, is said to have dressed in a monk’s habit but his dates do not coincide with those of Brouwer. Brouwer, if indeed he is the artist, died at the age of 32 and is said to have spent much of his time in alehouses, his paintings recording the activities he saw there.
