Little has been recorded about David James, but it is certain that he was known during his lifetime as a marine painter and that his main interest was in pure seascapes, particularly the motion of waves. He is also known to have worked extensively in Cornwall, very probably in StIves. He also worked in Devon and had at least two paintings 'A North Cornish Breaker' and 'An Atlantic Roll' shown at the Royal Academy during the 1880s.
