Urban landscape, townscape view of a bombed area. The foreground is littered with rubble, splintered wood, bricks, etc. In the middleground on the left is a long building behind a wall, with two rows of windows. In the centre is the side of a house or factory, and to the extreme right of the picture are the backs of houses and yards. Behind these buildings stands a taller one, with three floors; however, it is a hollow shell, with no roof, and there seems to be a fire inside. In the background to the left of the picture rises a church tower and more buildings. 'Painted after the night of enemy aerial attack May 8–9 1941'. Benner was trained at College of Art by Arthur Spooner RBA and when this painting was pruchased in 1943 he was art Master at the Boys High School Nottingham.
