Matthew Poppelwell was an Alderman, Mayor of Tynemouth and a ship owner, as a partner in Bell, Bell and Poppelwell. In 1854 he opened the Tynemouth Pier at the entrance to the River Tyne. He had a street named after him, but the local council did not spell his name correctly so it is called Popplewell Terrace.
