The sculptor Max Sokol was born in Warsaw, Poland on 2nd April 1895. He went to Germany as a young man, and studied art there, first in Stettin and then in Berlin. He immigrated to England in 1937 and became a naturalised citizen in 1947. He died in London on 21st June 1973. After arriving in England, Sokol rapidly established himself as a distinguished and highly respected member of the art community. His works were exhibited regularly at the Royal Academy and other art galleries around the country. He saw art as a reflection of life, and as an expressionist he vividly depicted both the sorrows and the triumphs of the human spirit. He was also highly sought after as a portraitist, for his remarkable ability to capture the character and personality of his subjects.
