Closely related to the marble portraits of the poet executed by Louis-Francois Roubiliac between 1738 and 1741, this black lead bust of Alexandre Pope from John Cheere's workshop has an integral cast eyelet in the back, indicating that it was designed for display in an architectural niche, possibly out of doors.

Pope visited Marble Hill regularly from his own villa in Twickenham and collaborated with Bridgeman in designing the gardens.
