Alice Stopford Green was an Irish historian and Nationalist. She was born Alice Amelia Stopford in Kells, County Meath. She married John Richard Green, a historian and clergyman from Oxfordshire. In London she often entertained budding artists. Sent from Scarborough to be her secretary was a young woman by the name of Emily Appleyard, she became the artist’s wife. Alice Green was a friend of the Irish Free Army Officer, Michael Collins. It is said that she often collected money for the cause. After the death of her husband she returned to Ireland where she became a member of the Irish Parliament. She died in 1929.
