William Blake was well known as a poet and an engraver. His works were largely allegorical, often with literary or mythological themes that related to his own personal beliefs. This painting is one of a series of 102 images that illustrate Dante's 'Divine Comedy'. The intention was to turn the paintings into engravings for publication. Blake began just seven of these engravings before his death in 1827.
