The sitter wears rank badges for Colonel on his shoulder straps, as was introduced in October 1880, but the uniform has yellow facings. The facing colour for both the 57th and 77th Regiments of Foot (subsequently 1st and 2nd Battalions The Middlesex Regiment) changed to white in August 1881.
