As Minister of Health in the 1945 Labour Government, Aneurin Bevan (1897–1960) spearheaded the establishment of the National Health Service (NHS) in England and Wales in 1948. Bevan officially launched the first NHS hospital at Park Hospital in Trafford, Manchester, on 5th July of that year. One of ten children, and partly self-educated, Aneurin Bevan did not do well at school in Tredegar in south-east Wales.
