Anne Gerrard, Lady Tredway married the diplomat Dudley Carleton in 1607. Like her husband, Lady Carleton was an art connoisseur and she travelled to the Netherlands to buy paintings for Elizabeth, Queen of Bohemia and George Villiers, Duke of Buckingham. Her marriage was notably happy although she died with no surviving children. The royal physician Sir Theodore de Mayerne described her as the 'queen of wives'. This portrait of Lady Carleton is richly adorned with jewels and a pearl and feather headpiece. On her chest sits a rosette with a large heart-shaped gemstone crested with a coronet. The oval locket pinned to her dress may have contained a portrait miniature. It makes a splendid contrast to the sober image of her husband painted at the same time.
