Annunciation scene panel from Fountains Abbey. It shows the Virgin standing to the right next to a reading desk/lectern with a cranked stem. This supports an open book detailed with a book clasp. There is an altar vase of lilies in the centre, and the kneeling archangel Gabriel to the left with a scroll which is supported by the holy spirit in the form of a dove the scroll bears the legend 'Ave M(a)ria (gratia) plena d(omi)n(u)s tecu(m)'. At the top left, the face of God appears from amongst the clouds. On the upper right is an angel, with the head and upper body depicted, his hand lifting the textile drapery framing the scene. On the border above the Holy Spirit is another angel laid along the border, the left hand lifting the drapery. The main background of the panel, which still bears thick white gesso, is composed of rays emanating from the Virgin and Gabriel. A chase in the left-hand edge of the panel shows that it was possibly fitted within a wooden surround.
