This painting depicts two Devis (Apsaras) found in the Ramaswamy temple, a temple dedicated to Lord Rama and located in the South Indian town of Kumbakonam, which is of high religious significance to Hindus. The Ramaswamy temple is very well known for its stone carvings. It's rare to get an artistic rendition of these carvings as neither photographs or reproductions are allowed inside the temple. But as a young Arts Lecturer in 1983, the artist was given special access inside the temple by the priests to reproduce various temple carvings including these two Devis.
