The effect of drinking wine can be seen in this image of the young Bacchus, Roman god of wine, who has fallen asleep letting the rest of his wine pour away out of his jug.

Although the foreground drinking scene is drawn from classical mythology, the landscape to the left, with a river winding past distant mountains has a northern European character. The painter of the figure is working in the style of the artist van Balen. However, the landscape was probably painted by a different artist. Such collaboration was common practice at the time.

The painting has probably been at Brodsworth Hall since it was built in the 1860s. It is mentioned in the first inventory to record the contents of the house which was made in 1885.
