In the 1980s and 1990s Clough turned her focus to a form of still life painting. Despite her reputation as a painter of greys and browns, Clough was in fact an extremely sophisticated colourist and after two cataract operations in the early 1980s, which reversed her deteriorating eyesight, she positively revelled in colour. Prunella Clough won the Jerwood Painting Prize in 1999.
