Educated at Queen's, he gained an MA in 1602, DD in 1615. He became a Fellow in 1604 and was Provost from 1616 to 1626. He was liked by Charles I, in spite of his Puritan leanings, chief almoner to Charles I, 1628 and Bishop of Carlisle from 1629 to 1642.
