The characteristic blue shades indicate this painting's Chinese origins, probably painted in Canton. The painting shows the ‘Rosebud’ with the mountains of Hong Kong in the background. The barquentine ‘Rosebud’ (the second of its name) was built at Peterhead by Carnegie & Matthew for John Collie and launched in 1876. Like its predecessor, the vessel was used on the South African and Far-Eastern trade routes. The ‘Rosebud’ was wrecked at Mossel Bay near the Cape of Good Hope in 1888.
