The sculpture was probably produced using the branch of a tree and is part of a larger Chinese sculpture in the form of a tree with deity figures and birds. Its surface appears to be dark brown and varnished, with knolls and knobbles in areas. The natural forms of the wood have been used to form the body of the bird. The bird's head has been carved and extends out and upward on the left side. The head has a long beak and eyes have been made using two small black beads. The body appears to have a small wing or upward-bending foot carved into the surface on the left side and a carved leg extending downward.
