This fountain was produced for the Great Exhibition of 1851. The Great Exhibition provided the Coalbrookdale Company with the opportunity to produce large-scale dramatic pieces that would ensure their artistic legacy. The fountain stood in the north transept of the Crystal Palace, in front of the 60-foot wide ornamental gates that were also produced by Coalbrookdale. The fountain was subsequently purchased by Wolverhampton Corporation for £150 in 1853. It stood in front of the market hall until being transferred to West Park in 1881, and there it remained for another 50 years or so. At an unknown date it was removed and 'lost' until the damaged components were re-discovered in 1958. The fountain was brought back to Coalbrookdale for repair and was erected adjacent to the Old Furnace for the opening of the 1959 Museum.
