Lord Frederic Leighton was the son of a prosperous doctor. His father gave up his practice to cultivate musical and artistic tastes and, for the sake of his wife's health, to travel on the continent. By the age of 11 Frederic Leighton had taken drawing lessons from Francesco Meli in Rome and under various masters in London, Dresden, Berlin, Frankfurt and Florence. In 1848 he spent a year studying in Brussels and was in Paris in 1849. He then returned to Frankfurt where he studied for three years. In Rome he was helped and advised by Richard Buckner and from there in 1855 exhibited his first picture at the Royal Academy, 'Cimabue's Celebrated Madonna Carried in Procession through the streets of Florence'. This caused a sensation and was bought by Queen Victoria, launching him on a long and highly successful career.
