Until 1912 this moody genre scene had an attribution to Caravaggio. Attributions have since been proposed to Piazzetta; to Neapolitan or Spanish seventeenth-century artists; to Louis Finson; or to different French or Flemish followers of Caravaggio. The subject of pensive musicians was especially popular in the circles of Angelo Caroselli and of Michelangelo Cerquozzi. However, this painting appears to be northern Italian.
