This large painting of a butcher’s shop is part of a series made by the artist of the same subject during the 1950s. Coker was one of a group of artists known as the ‘Kitchen Sink Group’ who painted bleak images of real life. Other artists in the group included John Bratby and Edward Middleditch. The paint in the picture is very thick and was probably applied with a palette knife, perhaps with the addition of sand to give the paint even more texture.
