Brett here depicts a July morning on the Isle of Anglesey. The view is taken from the fields between the villages of Brynsiencyn and Dwyran looking towards Caernarfon. The Menai Strait is hidden by the foreground hills but Caernarfon Castle and the town are just visible in the middle distance. Rising up behind the castle is Mynydd Mawr, the Elephant Mountain, and in the left background are the slopes of Moel Eilio. Brett had visited Anglesey in 1866 and 1867 while he was a bachelor, but in 1875 he spent three months in north Wales with his wife and young family and made a number of pencil studies and oil paintings of Caernarfon and the countryside surrounding the Menai Strait.
