Van der Neer began to paint nocturnes c.1645–1650, and the present picture is dateable to this period. The scene is constructed in the artist’s usual manner with a central river stretching into the distance. Picturesque interest is provided by the fishermen hauling their nets in the foreground and the silhouetted boats and townscape in the distance.
